Words, Rhymes and Creekside Times

An event sorted by the peeps at Flavour Magazine. A dense night of poetry, spoken word and just pure utter lyrical genius-ness!

The night was hosted by Dean Atta; an award winning poet, writer, performer and proud winner of the Spirit of London Award for 'Achievement through the Arts'.

Anthony Anaxagorou
The Ruby Kid
Nadia K
Mina
Isaac Nartey
Deanna Rodger
Bridget Minamore
Conrad The Scoundrel
JJSOULX (singer)

There was an open mic section midway through the event. There were 3 poets by the names of Kemi, Carmel and Lionheart. They all delivered some heart-touching, mind-churning poetry that had us all cemented to our seats.

I must admit the stars of the show were the girls (no older than 11years) from the local youth club that Dean Atta had been mentoring for the past few days. They had written poems and small pieces describing emotions, and people they care about. The quality was TOP-NOTCH and they most definitely struck some chords with the audience.

The highlight for me was the poem they did together that they called - Things Money Can't Buy.
They were listing things that could be bought this Christmas and contrasting them with priceless things. The line that got me was "Money can buy you a train ticket, but it can't buy your destination" which sank into me. I get the train down from uni every holiday to spend it with my family and I do wish the ticket was cheaper, but these girls made me realise that that there are  people like myself that go back home for the holidays to find that they don't feel as welcome in their own home. They arrive to find that things have changed dramatically and there's no room in the family picture for them. My thoughts go out to those ones.

The journey....
I ventured with my home-ette Liz Van Doef - trudging pon di tfl.

with pizzazzz. Making noise as usual, dancing in that gap that's always been talked about in the tannoy lol =P

...In the place now and we spot another handsome lad, that knew what he was doing.
HONESTLY, what are the chances?
I felt honoured to know that someone as talented and blessed as THE RUBY KID, wanted to leave his house looking like me =D lol

Meet Liz VanDoef...
(I know this isn't the most flattering picture... But this is what you do Liz, this is just what you do.)

She's been my sis for nearly 4 years (I think =S).
The one that knows when my situation changes between the extremities of emotions.
The one that sprays bars when I box out a beat,
The one that helps me dress my mind with wisdom.
The one that hooks me up.
The one that's humble, caring and kind.
The one that just knows how to run the business.
And...
...
The one that opens bottles with her teeth
=/

She can do greatness too!
Preeeee the beginning of something beautiful.
Her first ever performance poem:

Snoopin' around the TinTerneT

I just slipped into one of those times when you're sitting on your internet, looking for a radical wave to surf on. I was astounded and incredibly amused by the content of this blog I just found:

I laughed at it, looked at again and laughed some more. Then I scrollllllllllllllllllllllled down.

J. Cole Freestyles over "Ima Boss" and "Otis" on Radio

FIIIIRE
That's what this is.

If you've been following J. Cole you'd have been anticipating his 3rd edition of Any Given Sunday before the album Cole World: The Sideline Story drops on Sept 27th. Pshhhh! This guy's even got pizzazz. Instead of re-releasing some old stuff on a short tape, my guy has gone on the radio and freestyled on 2 of the biggest beats in the rap game. This is the best freestyle I've heard on either beats, I dare you to disagree.

As it plays in the background as I write this post. I've just got my left hand on my head tryna stop my head boppin' into my laptop screen.

Aint nuttin better than some fresh killlller lyrics.
If only I was one of the listeners to the station.
*sigh*

[[[LIVE]]] J. Gordon @Upstairs At The Ritzy 01/09/11

On that day, the 1st of September I had the priveledge of taking a front seat at
J.GORDON's first ever London gig.
This was my first time going up into Brixton to see a performance lol (usually I try my best to avoid the area =P) but its actually NOT SO BAD now! The thing that's still about the same/getting worser and worserer is the cloud of people patrolling the train station entrance, tapping/shouting/wailing for a day travelcard from someone in need of it no more.

Accompanied by his producer Nathan Lay, Gordon altered the aura of the venue, the stage was graced by many smooth poets before him and the songs (another form of poetry) were literally body warmers, raising the heat at the venue. Taking breaks to get some air were essential for brain function lol.

You only had to be there to experience the whole surrealness of the occasion.

You missed out and you know you want to watch any clips... so here's a few

Be sure to watch out for his album: JUSTINTHEMAKING

XV - The Kick

This guy has been quiet for a very very long while. But he's back with some cool ish.
Gotta hand the production to DJ Tech-Neek though *clap-clap* topnotch sir. It takes a different kind of mind to pick a classical movie soundtrack (a Hans Zimmer piece) and wrap a bass kick and snare to it. If you're wondering, "Time" - Hans Zimmer (Inception soundtrack) is the sampled track.

Got bored on a Sunday afternoon

... So I picked up my ukulele and thought I'd do my first recorded cover and stick it on youtube.

There is a story behind the ukulele...

Errrmm... Near the end of Year 13 (last year at Sixth Form/College) a few friends and I were invited to perform at the main school concert (my Sixth was joint to a Secondary School aswell). So we were prancing around the net looking for a song we could all sing. During the search, one of the girls went on a tangent and found the cute little ukulele boy on youtube strumming with some skill what looked like a guitar his size, whilst wailing Jason Mraz's - I'm Yours in baby language lol. We were all just like "Awwww he's so cute" then... *moist* then I... *hides face lol*. Before I say more moist things, you can see for yourself....

So...
After performing at the concert and singing our own rendition of Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, my birthday soon came. Obviously I invited those I performed with. And one of those that I spent time rehearsing with and the one that was like a mother to me during my time at Sixth Form - Dololo (her nickname =P) brought along with her a weird oblong box to the dinner. I looked at the box with Superman's x-ray vision and saw the ukulele. I broke down and all sorts, hyperventilating in the middle of the restaurant. I was dying. But I was dying happily lol.

When I took it home and showed my parents and everyone else around, I tried to tune it, and broke the 1st string. I thought: "bruv, you best put this thing down and give it to an expert before you destroy it". So I fixed the string back and settled it back in the box. I couldn't help but glance at it and strum on some made-up chords lool. I mustered the courage to tune it again and from then on, I've been playing it ever since. I remember the date precisely...

The Cool Kids ft. Maxine Ashley – Summer Jam (Video)

My favourite dynamic duo from Chicago - The Cool Kids (comprised of Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks) have just dropped another video to probably my favourite track from their debut album When Fish Ride Bicylcles, entitled Summer Jam. This track is just the coolest, chillout vibe track I've heard in a while, since the re-ups from the DJ Jazzy Jeff & Mick Boogie: Summertime mixes. But to be honest, everything Pharrell Williams sticks a foot in, goes swell, especially on the production. Enough chit chat. Come to my pool party a vibe with me.

=D

Mac Miller - Frick Park Market (video)

I'm a fan of Mac Miller, but I'm not really anymore =\. I don't know why... *wonders*...
Well here's a fun video. Stuff gets real crazy and weird and all neon and shieet lol
Enjoy.

d(-__-)b ->> GHOSTPOET - Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam

Ghostpoet's debut album released early in February of this year (2011), is nothing short of greatness. It's impossible to put this album into a genre. This guy is so creatively crafty with the way he's ventured through the different avenues of music. Dubbing himself "a lad with a lisp and some stories to tell", being born and bred on the gritty streets of Coventry, he paints a picture of how life is/was like over underwater, free-slowing, repetitive boom claps. This is the ISH to be listening to, when you knockin' back that ISH... ya feel me.

In this album of only 10 tracks he's spanned the worlds of hip-hop, trip-hop, dubstep, indie and all sorts. I've gotta admit... It's frikkkin GENIUS! Especially on his debut. He's even got Kano on the wave. Ghostpoet (Mike Skinner's favourite lyricist) and Kano (Jay-z's favourite UK MC) on the one track Cash and Carry Me Home (remix) at RedBull London Studios, courtesy of SoulCulture.Tv

The best track for me on here is Finished I Ain't. The production on this has sealed it for me, the sluggish simple beat, that creates visuals in your head of you getting a tour of his hometown around him. This is a big one for me.

If you wanna hear and download.

Blu ft. Nia Andrews - My Sunshine (video)

I'm just gonna sit back here in London and wish that "summer" here could just be as peaceful as this.
Honestly when I first watched this, I didn't pay any attention to the verses - I just heard the chorus and watched the flicking pictures

d(-__-)b ->> CARIBOU - Swim

This album is composed of 9 eye-warming tracks. Psychedelic sounds wrapped around an electronica beat, which is the kinda stuff I like listening to when I want to just close my eyes and zone out to some noises lol.  If you've heard of Toro y moi... They sound sorta similar. Listening to it again now, (as I write this review) I see these being used as soundtrack for something like a rave on the moon - all slow mo'. You know them videos where there's people partying and there's just strobe lights attacking your iris... Them kind.

The track on the album for me is "Odessa". I'm sure if you enjoy your football and have played FIFA 11, you'd recognise this track.

This is how I've been the past 5 days or so,
my headphones stuck on, plugged in to my iTunes,
speaking in lyrics,
walking to beats,
chewing to claps,
and bathing in time to track length.

No cut-eyes or screwface though... It's been lovely jubbly.

I've been listening to alot of stuff lately both old and new, and out of each album/EP /mixtape, I've been sussing out favourites and sorting them into playlists, getting them ready for The Big Sync.

THE BIG SYNC
(Basically the updating of my iPod - An event that doesn't happen so often occur because I'm a lazy bum)
 *SIGH*
(and my 4year old 3rd gen iPod Nano is only 8GB)
 =|
(yeahhhh... I feel like a right lemon head now. Wicked)

I said on my Twitter (@bobonova) that I'd blog about what I've been listening to. So what I'm going to do with the next set of posts titled:
d(-__-)b
 or
d(-__-)b
or
d(-__-)b
or
  d(-__-)b

I'm gonna write reviews of what I've been listening to and of course recommend a track from that album/ mixtape/whatever.

STAY LOCKED IN.

Adidas Originals iPhone app

This just sucks that I didn't get an iPhone 4. Getting a Blackberry Torch is fun, but I want FUNN-NERRR. I can't blog from it, reading up on other material is a draaaaaaggggg, the games are just some crap rebore iphone/android ones that're unresponsive and yadda yadda yadda. Since I broke my iPhone, I've had to settle with the BB Torch.

I must admitBlackberry is not the device for me. Even with all the revamps and sizzling up thats been done to the software and interface... its still only really good for the messenger and I think thats going to be as far as it goes for Blackberry. All unless they better the apps, and make more room for creativity, without stealing any Apple intel of course and avoid the suing lol.
Enough ranting about Blackberry this post is about the wonderful iPhone and the new addition to the App Store....

The Adidas Originals app

One thing that just amazes me about this app is the 3D image recognition software that allows you to take a snapture of your right-paired Adidas and find similar pairs with similar colourways.
Pshhhhhh even the frikkin store locator

If you wanna know the tech stuff from the Adidas technicals, this bit below is for you...
(For the others, there's a demo video abit further down)

adidas Originals launches first-of-its-kind iPhone® application
3D image recognition provides users with recommendations for new sneakers
Herzogenaurach, Germany, August 5th, 2011 – adidas Originals has created a unique application for providing first-of-its-kind access to the brand via the iPhone®. With the help of a special 3D image recognition software, users get their recommendation for a new pair of sneakers by taking a snapshot of a pair of shoes, and the closest matching product from the iconic sportswear label that is currently available will be generated. The snapshot is just the entry point into the mobile adidas Originals world, where users can also check out the nearest adidas store, flip through the product catalogue, or become one of the 10.5 million fans on the adidas Originals Facebook page.
Even though image recognition applications have made their way into the marketplace, the adidas Originals App uses 3D image recognition for real-life objects/products, which is the first of its kind in its industry. Users take a photo of a sneaker, and the application responds with the closest, most relevant matches based on the colour of the input image. This gives consumers the chance to find the best replacement for their favourite old sneakers, to find adidas sneakers most similar to shoes that might have caught their eye somewhere, or to simply play around and explore the different styles of adidas Originals sneakers in a fun way.
While the image recognition tool offers an exciting entry point to the app, the user will also be able to scroll through the adidas Originals catalogue, spin the products around in a 360 degree view and stay up-to-date about brand news and content from adidas. Users will also be able to find adidas Originals stores within 50 km of their location. Through Facebook Connect users will be able to share their favourite products with their friends.
A quick link to the adidas Originals Facebook page provides qualitative content, such as new product drops, events and contests, on a daily basis. The Facebook presence has developed into a global information hub from adidas Originals, well received by more than 10.5 million fans to date.
The adidas Originals App is available for free from August 5th, 2011 and will be first presented in public during the Lollapalooza 2011 Festival in Chicago, USA, from August 5th-7th, where festival visitors can download and try out the app.

Elle Varner ft. J. Cole - Only Wanna Give It To You

Here's some new stuff, from some new stuff. I'm pretty sure most of us have never heard of Elle Varner, but after such a track with a cool feature from J. Cole, she's bound to become a common name.
For a first record with Sony, she's come out with an oldschool, goodvibes, 90's R&B/HipHop track that could get my mum boppin her head while her neck is rolling on the steering wheel.
This even compliments the beautiful weather we have right now in London.

FRANK OCEAN - Thinking About You

"Frank Ocean" *changes voice* "Frank Ocean" *changes voice* "Frank Ocean"
This guy's name is becoming somewhat common. I think down here in London the buzz for this guy has somewhat drowned the hype for the anticipation of Jigga and Yeezy's "Watch The Throne" LP

0_0
Mr Ocean is gonna be on it anyways, and when it comes closer to AUGUST 8th, I'll be lookin to see who's buzzing for who.

From his Tumblr page a few hours ago, the OFWG member EVERYONE loves (lol) - Frank Ocean has let loose a new track. It's always nice to hear some new stuff from artists that are working on albums, it shows that they care about their fans. I'm gonna warn you now this one's a panty dropper. Hold on tight.

Beyoncé – Best Thing I Never Had (Live on Jimmy Fallon)

I'm sure you've heard about all the kerfuffle with Queen B's LP 4 being leaked and everything, but it didn't stop it from topping the charts again (for the 4th time). She appeared on the Jimmy Fallon Show last night and performed her latest single "Best Thing I Never Had" accompanied by The Roots. Although she was a little unwell (hence why she didn't do the high part) she still KILL'T it. You can even see it in her eyes, Sasha just wanted to come out and devour everyone lol. She's been working REAL hard, with everything going on with the album and Clint Eastwood's remake of "A Star Is Born", she's been a busy somebody.

A Beyoncé performance - nothing less that impeccable.

**NEW ARTIST** J. Gordon

Here, I have before you and brand new and upcoming artist,

J. Gordon

He's just released his first full track entitled "Easier" which you can listen to and download below

I've had the pleasure of working alongside him. We performed at a show in Leicester - The Acoustic Chill and I managed to get a sneaky video of him during the rehearsal

You'll see (like I have) that this guy is really humble and he just loves music. Not like everyone else though lol. When he and music, get jiggy and do the business, I've always felt that warm, floating on a yellow cloud feeling. Maybe its just because I've heard him LIVE.
He's been described as the man with the velvet voice that can sing almost anything. Any more info on this guy will be unravelled in the interview ;)

If you ever see the name "J. Gordon" on the list of acts for any sort of event, be sure to attend and witness the magic yourselves.

Enjoy.
=D

Be prepared for more posts about this guy and watch THIS space and his facebook page, souncloud for more upcoming stuff.

I'm the bestest oldest brother ever!

Today... I didn't plan anything (unsurprisingly)...So I told myself I'd stay in bed till at least noon, even if my eyes opened...

  • 10:45am - My lil bro is all jumpy and stuff, all set to go out and search for a decent pair of sneakers for himself. In my sleepy state he asks me for £2. Without any fussle, I gathered 2 thick gold coins, (1 of which was incredibly shiny) and handed it to him. Then returned to sleep.
  • 11.20am - I hear the door knock. (only me and my sis in the house now, everyone else is out) My eyes open, my body - immobilised. My lil sister was up, so she went and opened the door, assuming it was a parcel for me. It was Jehova's Witnesses. As soon as I heard em asking if there was anyone in the house with her, blood began flowing, muscles respiring, bones clicking, and I rolled out of bed and wrapped a towel round. This time the sun was doing some wicked blinding shine. No hands could ease the stinging pain. I was pissed. So I closed my eyes and stood at the door in my towel while this woman and her posse told me about some golden statue and an event in Twickenham. That's all I remember. I returned to sleep
  • 11.40am - "Let's Carpe Diem, I'm gonna get out of bed by noon"
  • 12.20pm - "ARRRGGHHH, I'm gonna get out of bed by 1pm
  • 12:56pm - Begins day

That's how my day started... and obviously a few pings and a good session of Kendrick Lamar

After trudging around the house like a troll, eating everything and anything I could see to fill that breakfast slot in my stomach, I slumped down in my thinking sofa and just decided that I'm gonna take my sis out to Stratford.

Usually, she's a nuisance to have around, but she surprisingly behaved herself. We walked all the way there, walked around and walked back. She didn't complain she was tired or her feet were hurting either.

I even got us some SUNNY D.
SUNNY D back yo!
SUNNY D's BACK! Betcha never thought the orange drink would make a comeback
But awwwhh yEAH it's back. In 1Litre of orange-ness!

All we did was a lil bit of grocery shopping, then with the remainder of £4 in my account we went trudging through the rest of the shops =P

I've gotta go get her more games for her DS. It's just been neglected lately =\

The next day (today)....

We went to the park
We played,
We swung,
We slid,
We spun,
We climbed,
We ran,
We kicked,
We rocked

and obviously there were other kids in the park, But 2 homies came to join us

=D

After alotta rollin' around....

HOME TIME
='(

I don't know who was more sad to have to leave the park. It was out of me and the lil homie =P

But to be honest, the stuff they had there in the park was GREAT for kids my age. Not for kids below the age of 10. I've named the play area the "Danger Zone". Just looking like The Final Destination for kids. lol

AHhh welll...
Its been 2days of fun with the lil 'un. She can't say to me I didn't take her anywhere.
I'm getting too old for this jumpy stuff. I'm gonna slouch with Sunny D in my cup while she plays out with the kids in the neighbourhood.

Open the door, It's ME. (I forgot my keys) =\

HAY HAY HAY...
I'm back yo! =D.
I know its been a while.
Been caught up quite a bit with some shizzle nizzle and bizzle.
I hope you've all been good likkle kiddies since I was gone....

*everyone says "Yesss Mr. Bobo"*
GOOD. Thats what I like to hear

Oh boy, have I got stories to tell YOU! =D
And I have quite a few new artists to post about and stuffs.
Don't be thinking that because I was away for a while, I've forgotten about you. Pssshhhh

But it sure does feel good to be back again.

*skanks off*

Nike Air Force 1 - HYPERFUSE Pack

You've probably seen the HYPERFUSE torch-pannelled black dunks with polar white soles that've got that sparkly stuff around the embossed swoosh. Here is the HYPERFUSE installment on the Air Force 1s.
For everyone the Air Force 1s have always been a super duper chunky pair to take strides in. You may complain and wonder how and why Nike have come out with some disgusting colorways - but each to their own.

Drake - Trust Issues

Drake just released this today. Sounds blissful... But I have ONE question.

Has his singing improved?

If you're asking me... I'd say yes.
Since the release of a few of the tracks set for the next album "Take Care" Drake's voice is just sounding all too Drakey. You can't get caught slipping tryna cajole a girl with these unless your names Aubrey Graham... FAT CHANCE!

My only advice is to keep him from your girl,
put condoms on her eardrums,
cos once he starts whispering sweet sweetie smooth stuff in their ears... There's no redemption.

Unless... Frank Ocean will work.
And when all else fails.... Just go TYLER on her and hope she survives

=S
*Gulp*

Some quite INteresting visuals

I'm not gonna blab much on these, but heres a quick blurb for you.

---------------------
I was surfing around as I usually do, and I came across Bon Iver's video to their Calgary track (I've been tryna stay up with them, especially since Kanye sampled them =P) , I was like:

"*gets weirdfeeling* =] Hmmm, this sounds beautiful *looks at video* What? Huh?  =S"

The video is directed by Dan Huiting and Andre Durand
 Watch and feel for yourself.

I'm just about to get their first album: Bon Iver - "Bon Iver" that just came out today.
NME did a review and gave it 7/10
  Why? Buy and Listen
Available on Amazon

Or you can stream the full album

 ---------------------

Next we have a James Blake one. I'm sure you've heard his album and noticed something magical about the LINDESFARNE
track.

Something WEIRDLY strange.
and EERRRRRRRRRRRIE
See the video
I don't understand what this is all about and I think imma just stay in the blue on this

Mac Miller Ft. Talib Kweli - Family First

Mac Miller passed half a million followers the other day on his Twitter, so he decided to drop us all a lil present. A nice new track. YIPEE =D
Wickedly, he's got Like (from Pac Div) on the buttons, pressing keys and filling with all sorts of synths and sounds, to produce a real cool mellow beat that breathes - even bliss-er unaided by lyrics. But I must admit that this story-telling flow is real SMOOTH

FRANK OCEAN - NOVACANE (video)

MAKE SURE YOU WATCH IT TO THE END

For those wondering what NOVACANE is.
Novacane/ Novacaine is a very heavy anaesthetic that is administered by Dentists. It basically numbs the tissue in your mouth so when you're getting a root canal or about to undergo some sort of strenuous dental op. It can kill ya =]

I BeHome For The Holidays

[the picture is explained at the bottom of the post]

Ahhhh...
First year of university [tick]

An eventful Summer at home [pending]

Its always been the case where everyone in my house says at the beginning of every summer:

"This summer is going to be eventful"

This year didn't start any different. But I've got a slight feeling that this summer is gonna be pretty amped.
The one thing I've got to conquer is that plan-flopping mechanism.
You know when you plan to do something the next day and you go to sleep thinking "Ahhhh... tomorrow's gonna be fun!" with the most stupidest smile on your face... You wake up and its like you woke up into a nightmare - everyone and everything involved in your plans for the day have FLOPPED. Then you're left motive-less.
That has to stop this summer. To succulently succeed I'm gonna have to drop the dirty habits I adopted at universtiy

Vows
  • I'm going to go sleep at reasonable times and wake up before noon.
  • Get a head start on the content for 2nd year
  •
  • Don't go out EVERY day - go out when there is a more than 49% chance you're gonna do something productive
  • Keep room tidy
  • Get some journalism experience or a job
  • See Snookums
  • Update the iPod
  • Procrastinate less
That last one is a REAL bugger. =/
However... I bet myself £1,000,000 that I'd succeed in everything else =P

BLEUUUUUUURRGGGGHH
I MISS MY UNI ROOM
=[

Midway packing at about 4am... Posters down, draws empty, trainers boxed, clothes bagged
...After it all, abit of sunlight came through

My belovéd reclining uni-chair.
This chair yeah...
*fingers on lips*
=P

...now that I'm back home. The first thing I did after unpacking was place my Xbox on top of my younger brother's and played his games.
I'm BAD init?
lol

Jussa Quickie

Dear blog,

Apologies its been over a week. Mr Bobo has been really busy lately. If you haven't seen or heard... He's won the position as Events Manager for the African Caribbean Society at DMU (DeMontfort Univeristy). He was and still is elated with the results, and understands that time waits for no man, or woman, or inbetweener so he's putting in ample work in to set stuff up for September before all the Freshers arrive.
On another note... *flicks post-it*
He has felt the relationship between the two of you has grown considerably and misses you dearly. He said I should drop some stuff for you.

The Weeknd

click image for "House of Balloons" album

Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd is a new 20 year old artist from Toronto. This guy is sorta unknown to everybody but Drake. Being that they're from the same town and everything, it could just be one of those ones where Drake is just giving his fellow Toronto-ian a push in the mega-money-making direction. He's been mentioned on his October's Very Own blog and his Twitter.
It doesn't really matter how much Drake has been promoting him, If people like his sound... they like his sound. I most certainly do.

He produces his own, and its something new, I don't know what kind of genre to class him, some kind of supersonic, thematic, lo-fi, special, black and red box at the top of your wardrobe kinda music...
I hear the Kanye and Drake influence in his music though... He's on more of a mood-setting tip with such  production on each track got you feeling a certain way about that scrrrrrrrrrrrumptious person of the opposite sex in front of you. =]

The album HOUSE OF BALLOONS was released near the end of March '11. I must say its got a considerable number of plays on the iTunes already.
The thing thats got everyone peering at this guy's twitter and youtube is that this album is the first of a trilogy, the next two don't have any release dates but they're bound to sound abit like: someday of somemonth 2011.
The guy is planning on letting loose THURSDAY and ECHOES OF SILENCE all before the year 2011 is over.

3 albums in one year!?
LEGGO!
